About Moon Phases
How long is a lunar cycle?
A complete lunar cycle (from new moon to new moon) takes approximately 29.5 days, known as a synodic month. This is slightly longer than the moon's orbital period due to the Earth's movement around the sun.
What is a supermoon?
A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon's closest approach to Earth (perigee). It appears about 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical full moon at apogee.
Does the moon phase affect tides?
Yes. The strongest tides (spring tides) occur during new and full moons when the sun, Earth, and moon align. The weakest tides (neap tides) occur during quarter moons when the sun and moon are at right angles.
