About MAC Addresses
What is a MAC address?
A MAC (Media Access Control) address is a unique hardware identifier assigned to every network interface — your Wi-Fi card, ethernet adapter, etc. It's 48 bits, written as 6 groups of 2 hex digits separated by colons.
What does the OUI prefix tell you?
The first 3 bytes (6 hex digits) of a MAC address are the OUI (Organizationally Unique Identifier), assigned by the IEEE to device manufacturers. This lookup identifies who made the device.
Can I find a device's location from its MAC address?
No. MAC addresses identify the hardware manufacturer, not a physical location. Unlike IP addresses, MAC addresses are local to your network and don't travel beyond your router.
